to honour the brave:war cemetries
The Second World War is a tragedy for humankind that should not be repeated. The soldiers who died and fell were brave men of honour, most of them little more than boys.

Hanthawaddy War Cemetery
hantharwaddy war cemeteryThere is a small cemetery in Yangon for Allied soldiers, not far from the Shwedagon Pagoda.

Htauk Kyant War Cemetery
Some miles north of Yangon on the Yangon-Bago highway, there is the Htauk Kyant War Cemetery with the graves of 27,000 Allied soldiers. The beautifully landscaped and peaceful cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery
The ‘Death Railway’ of the book and movie “Bridge on the River Kwai” is on the Myanmar side of the border situated in Thanbyuzayat, nearly 20 miles south of Mawlamyaing in the Tanintharyi Division. The construction of the bridge that was used by the Japanese as a supply route for the armies began in September 1942. The Allied bombed the bridge 20 months later. The Japanese used prisoners of war as labour, resulting in the death of over 16,000 POW and nearly 100,000 Asians conscripted workers.

The Thanbyuzayat War Cemetery honours the graves of 3771 Allied POWs who died on this Death Railway. There are many nationalities buried here: British, American, Dutch and Australian. This cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Maing Thauk Village
An even older cemetery from the mid 19th century can be seen, near Inle Lake at Maing Thauk Village once known as Mongsawk Village, situated in some sugar cane fields, soldiers who were not fighting for peace but to colonise the country.. The graves are not under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Bahahdur Shah Zafar Mausoleum
The last Emperor of the Mogul dynasty in India. "Sepoy-Mutiny" in the British regiments, which turned into an all out anti-British War of independence, the Emperor was exiled to Myanmar in 1858 AD.
