1000 meter above sea level is the Inle Lake, home to the Intha people and other ethnic minorities who make their living from fishing and floating vegetable gardens. Can see fishermen in his boat, standing on one leg and rowing with the other leg wrapped around the oar looking for fish to trap with his cone shaped fishing net made of bamboo. He is one of the many leg rowers that have made Inle Lake famous. During the festival in September, can see the boats with as many as 20 -30 men each standing on one leg and rowing with the other.All transport is by boat, whether to school, to do shopping or to attend the floating vegetable gardens.
Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda
Nyaung Shwe about an hour away a provincial town 1000 meter above sea
level is our gateway to the Inle Lake, home to the Intha people and other ethnic
minorities who make their living from fishing and floating vegetable gardens,
and something you have probably never seen before: A passing fisherman in his
boat, standing on one leg and rowing with the other leg wrapped around the oar
.Then the Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda of Inle Lake, one of the most famous pilgrimage
sites in Myanmar. The five images countless thousands of ties with gold leaf,
transforming them into round, golden lumps. In the mid 1970s all five images
were on the lake when a storm suddenly came up and the barge capsized. Only four
were recovered but when they went back to the pagoda they saw that the missing
image was already there, dripping wet but safe.
Sagar
Sagar is a ruined royal capital with ancient monasteries and pagodas at the
southern end of Inle Lake, in a beautiful, isolated setting far from villages.
Kekku Pagoda Complex
Hidden for centuries in the wooded hills near Taunggyi, the Kekku Pagoda
seems to be from the 16th century. Pa O national race legends say there are
7,622 pagodas, almost all decorated with floral designs of celestial beings.
Kalaw
A hill station town about 90 minutes drive from Inle Lake. Typical old English
cottages remain there in a very cool pleasant climate augmenting the pleasance
with a sweet pine and eucalyptus fragrance.
Pindaya
There is a cave housing more than 8000 Buddha images. No one seems to know how
they all got there. Most of them are apparently hundreds of years old while
others are recent additions. After exploring the caves, can have a rest and
something to eat and drink under the shady trees by the lake, before proceeding.
The route is a little rough over the hills with an ever winding road, taking
occasional stops in villages on the way.
Yasagyi
A marvelous trekking starting from Pindaya up to Yasagyi – a Palaung village ,
passing through the villages of the Danu & Pa-O tribes before reaching Yasagyi
Village at 6020 feet. Accommodation at the Yasagyi Monastery and early morning
trekiing up to the Yasagyi summit at 7030 Ft.. A slow descent to Pindaya passing
the farmlands and can come across the hill tribe people in their traditional
costumes performing their daily chores.
Taunggyi
High on a mountain is Taunggyi, literally meaning ‘Big Mountain’. It was not a
hill station but now a busy trade centre.
Kyaingtong
Near the Thai border with a beautiful Naung Ton Lake in the city to stroll
around in the evening. Colorfully decorated with local crafts and old textiles
generally available at prices much fairer than one can get at Chiang Mai. Also
commonly found there are the National Ethnic Groups with different costumes and
staying in separate villages and can be visited to see their life style while
trekking around the city's vicinity. Rare species of butterflies are abundant
for the collectors.
